These springs provide downward pressure on the front cultivators.  Fatigue and age often weaken these springs resulting in poor front cultivator performance.  They should usually be replaced in pairs to provide equal down pressure.  When these springs are in good condition they also allow the cultivator gangs to travel upwards.  This helps prevent breakage of the gangs and mounts when obstacle is encountered.
